Choose AlphaSense if
You want what the market, the brokers, the filings and the experts have already said, at a scale no single firm could assemble, and you would rather license that content.
Starch vs AlphaSense
AlphaSense is the largest licensed research library we have looked at; the difference is not quality but direction, theirs at the world's published research, ours at your firm's own work.

Choose Starch if
You want the process your desk repeats, the RFP or the deal workstream, run on your firm's own precedent, and you would rather we carried it.
| Axis | Starch | AlphaSense |
|---|---|---|
| What it is | Operated workflows for the field of finance, built on your precedent and systems. | A search and analysis platform over a licensed premium corpus. |
| The general workspace | Included. Agents, automations and apps, with a library and an inbox. | Is the product. A licensed research corpus. |
| Built for | Coverage groups and deal teams: public finance, M&A, financial institutions. | Investment research, corporate strategy, consulting and competitive intelligence teams. |
| The input | Your documents, your precedent, your CRM, your data room, your systems. | A licensed corpus of broker research, filings, transcripts and expert calls. |
| What a desk does with it | Reviews and approves a draft the workflow produced, then moves on. | Researches: asks a question, reads across sources, then acts elsewhere. |
| Recurring execution | Is the product. Workflows run on a cadence; nobody restarts them. | Research is a person's deliberate act. AlphaSense is adding agent capabilities. |
| Output | A sourced draft in your format, routed to a named approver. | Answers and analysis with the source documents behind them. |
| How it is priced | Scoped to the workflow and the desks it runs on. A build, then the running of it. | Not published. Priced per seat and negotiated; median annual contract near $18,000 across 39 purchases. |
| Where the value sits | In the firm's own accumulating precedent, which no competitor can license. | In the content rights: the corpus is the moat. |
Least overlapping pair here, and the name most often raised in this category: most such searches are for research, not for a workflow.
Broker research, filings and expert calls at that scale are a content-rights business no single firm could assemble.
It covers far more than finance; for a firm comparing a target across sectors, the reach is the point.
Knowing the consensus and where it is thin is the work for a coverage banker forming a view.
Before you decide
The four questions that come up once the table has been read, and the one where the honest answer is AlphaSense.
Onboarding is white-glove, and it starts with your desk rather than our product. We learn how the team works, which workflows it repeats and which systems those workflows touch, then judge whether what we build is a fit for that work. When it is not, we say so.
When it is a fit, we build the workflow around your precedent and your approval rules, tailor it to the formats the desk already uses, and deploy it securely in your own environment. Forward-deployed means the people who built it are the people who keep it working, so the integrations, the changes and the maintenance are ours rather than your team's.
Everything lives in your tenant. Your documents stay where they already sit, and the workflow runs against them there rather than against a copy we hold.
Access is deliberately narrow and permission-based. We are given what the work requires, for example redacted logs, and it is granted rather than standing.
Less than you would expect. Onboarding, deployment and the customer service that follows run one way, whether the desk covers public finance, M&A or financial institutions.
The product is where the variation sits. A public finance desk needs different things from a deal team, so each gets a workflow built against its own documents and its own approvals. The service around it stays constant.
If the workflow you need is not one we already serve, and it does not share the machinery the ones we serve are built on, we will tell you it is the wrong fit rather than build it anyway.
The same is true of research. If your need is finding published work and citing it, AlphaSense is the answer and we are not: a licensed corpus of broker research, filings and expert calls is the product, and it does that job well. And if your team's week is mostly simple drafting, a general AI subscription covers it. The Workspace runs a general assistant of our own, and it is not where we are strongest. Starch earns its place where the work is a repeating process rather than a document written once.
